英語で「〜の方を好む」と言いたいとき、
prefer A to B と would rather のどちらを使えばいいか迷ったことはありませんか？
実はこの2つ、意味は似ていますが、ニュアンスと文法に違いがあります。

ニュアンスの違い
prefer…一般的な好み を表します。
「普段はこれが好き」「どちらかと言えばこれを選ぶ」という柔らかい印象。
例文： I prefer tea to coffee.
（私はコーヒーより紅茶が好きです。→ 一般的な好み）

特に「prefer」は後ろにくる動詞の形（不定詞 or 動名詞）で意味が若干変わるので、そこも解説 します。
would rather…その場の選択や強い意志 を表します。
「今この瞬間にこれを選びたい」「むしろこれをしたい」、
その場での選択や、今の気持ちを強く表現。
例:I’d rather drink tea than coffee.
（私はコーヒーを飲むより今は紅茶を飲みたいです。→ 今の場面での選択）

prefer A to Bの使い方
「prefer A to B」における一般的な使い方ですが、細かいルールが存在します。
「prefer」は動詞としての役割を持つため後ろには、名詞・動名詞・不定詞がきます！
✅ 動詞の後に動詞を続ける場合のルール
- 名詞：モノやコトの名前（例：coffee, book など）
- 動名詞（～ing）：動詞＋ing（例：reading, running）
- 不定詞（to ～）：to ＋ 動詞の原形（例：to read, to run）
➡️ prefer のあとに動詞を置く場合、動名詞 or 不定詞のどちらかになります。
名詞がくる場合
I prefer tea to coffe.
(私はコーヒーよりお茶を好みます) → 一般的な好みを表すときに使います。
💡補足：可算名詞（cat, dogなど）の場合は複数形に！
❌ I prefer cat to dog.
→ 不自然。個体同士を比較しているように聞こえる。

動名詞（〜ing）を使う場合
I prefer reading books to watching movies.
（映画を見るより、本を読む方が好きです）
ニュアンス：動名詞が続く場合、「ふだんからその行動が好き」という意味になります。
不定詞（to＋動詞の原形）を使う場合
I prefer to walk to the park tonight.
(今夜はその公園を歩きたい)
ニュアンス：不定詞は「今これをしたい」と思っているような、その場での気持ちや予定を表します。

❌ I prefer to read a book to swim. ←文法ミス
✅ I prefer reading a book to swimming.（普段は水泳より読書を好みます）
つまり、「prefer」のみで行動比較におけるその場での気持ちや予定は表せない！

would rather + 動詞の原形
文型：would rather ＋動詞の原形＋than+動詞の原形
ニュアンス：「〜のほうを選びたい」「〜したい」という“今この瞬間の選択”を表す。
rahterで比較や選択を表す場合はwouldが必要になります！
would rather 動詞の原形A than 動詞の原形B （BよりもむしろAしたい）
例文：
・I‘d rather stay home than go out.
(I`d = I wouldの短縮形です！ 訳：外出するよりも家にいたい )
・We’d rather study English than watch TV.
（テレビを見るより、英語を勉強したい）
以下のように「to」や「〜ing形（動名詞）」を使うのは文法ミスです：
❌ I’d rather to stay home than go out.
❌ I’d rather staying home than going out.
→ 「would rather」の後は動詞の原形だけを使います！
💡 名詞は使えるの？
「would rather」の後ろに直接名詞だけを入れることはできません。
例:
❌ I’d rather tea than coffee.
✅ I’d rather drink tea than drink coffee.
→ 名詞の動作を表したい場合は、動詞の原形で使うのが正解です！
preferとratherを組み合わせるときの注意点
ニュアンス：その場での気持ちや予定を表すような行動の比較には不定詞を使う必要があります。
文型：prefer to 不定詞 A + rather than + 動詞の原形 B
例文：I prefer to read books rather than watch TV.
→ 不定詞を使う行動の比較は「rather than」を組み込む必要がある。
